It’s October! Time for fall, time for Halloween and for World Audio Drama Day – making this an extra special month for audio storytelling, especially of the spooky, strange and unusual type. While in past years we’ve made October shows particularly horror-full, this month we’ve decided to go the more bizarre and unnatural route and keep things a little lighter around here. This show will be a nice transition to this, as we move from the unknown suspense of The Orphans into the eclectic characters from King Falls AM and It’s All Been Done Radio Hour.
You’ve been hearing episodes of The Orphans for the last two weeks, and we’re excited to have them back again for one more installment this show. The story follows a group of castaways from a crashed spaceship as they struggle to survive an unknown world and the beasts that live on it. The Orphans is created by Zachary Fortais-Gomm, who was inspired by the ‘”We’re Alive” audio drama series and wanted to practice and learn more about sound design and developing soundscapes. The idea began to take shape in the midst of a film project and by the time the third episode was written, a cast had been assembled ready to bring the story to life. The storyline bloomed even further as Zach invited cast members to discuss and amend their characters’ dialogue in later episodes.
Another storytelling group inspired by audio drama to create their own are the writers of King Falls AM: Kyle Brown and Eric Kimelton. Wanting to bridge the gap between the golden days of radio plays and the world of podcasts, King Falls AM focuses on a lonely mountain town’s late-night radio talk show in a ‘Welcome to Nightvale’ kind of way…except a bit more steeped in reality despite it’s key use of the supernatural and unexplained. In fact, they take the realism to a whole new level by developing the authenticity of the show through outside engagement – with the King Falls Gazette, in-world messaging in social media and a working hotline mentioned by the radio station in each episode.
This show, we hear from The Orphans as the group is confronted by more vicious beasts and makes a startling discovery in Episode 3: Mistakes. After that, we jump to King Falls AM with their first episode, “660 on the Radio Dial“, followed by local favorite It’s All Been Done Radio Hour and a tale from their ‘Scary Dead’ series, entitled “You Can’t Survive Under a Dumpster“.
And when you hear It’s All Been Done Radio Hour on our program, you know that there’s bound to be a live show just around the corner! By the time this post is made public, their live show will have already passed, unfortunately – but you can catch their next one, as they have performances every month in central Ohio this year. Be sure to check out their website for upcoming shows and links to other projects under the It’s All Been Done umbrella. Or if you don’t want to wait, check out The Good, The Bad and the Geeky Podcast which focuses on pop culture with the occasional skit and audio play performance and brings in many of the same cast and crew from IABDRH. Don’t miss this local group!
