Welcome back, sonic snoops! It’s time for the final installment in our annual January of Jack Justice. This time, satisfy your madness for mysteries with episodes 62 (“Strange Bedfellows”) and 63 (“My Heart Belongs to Mummy”) from Black Jack Justice’s tenth season.
In “Strange Bedfellows,” a big boss is putting big pressure on Jack and Trixie to drop their only active case. Problem is: without the case, they’re pretty unemployed. With the case, they might end up pretty dead. How will they solve that conundrum?
Somehow, they do survive, only to take a sideroad to the supernatural in “My Heart Belongs to Mummy.” What’s a bodyguard to do when the body he’s guarding disappears? And when that body has been distinctly dead for a few thousand years, how exactly did it walk away? Our daring detectives delve deeply to unwrap the mystery.
Black Jack Justice enjoyed a remarkably long run for a show that was never intended to truly exist. It began as a radio play within a stage play. Creator Gregg Taylor wrote a comedy for a live theatre production about every broadcaster’s worst nightmare: a live show that isn’t even close to being ready to go on the air. In the play, the writer of a radio serial called Black Jack Justice wakes up from a drunken stupor – only to realize he doesn’t have a script for that night’s live broadcast. The play follows him, the cast, and crew as they try to wing it through the performance anyway. Audience reaction was so strong, Gregg Taylor decided to start an actual audio series about the fictional detective at the center of the on-stage mayhem.
