Ready to get lost in the unknown? This week and next, we have an interesting theme – situations where a group of people are thrown into some bewildering circumstances in unknown lands. We’re excited to share with you the first episodes of ‘Second Shift‘ from Blue Sky Red Productions and ‘The Orphans‘ by Blacktail Productions. This episode we take a closer look at ‘Second Shift’ and it’s beginnings before jumping into both stories (with more info on ‘The Orphans’ to follow next week).
‘Second Shift’ is a story you’ve probably heard before – a group of kids from our world are transported to another place entirely…where magic is real, evil threatens, and they’re caught in the middle of it all. But ‘Second Shift’ quickly became something more out of its beginnings. The premise provides a framework for a very human tale about the search for purpose, the consequences of actions, and the meaning of “home.” While not the first of its kind, ‘Second Shift’ was among the earliest audio theater projects to focus on the relatively new medium of podcasting at the time. Even among the amateur audio theater podcasts, ‘Second Shift’ stood out with its ambitious, long-form story with a full cast and no narrator. Between June of 2006 and July of 2011, they released 29 episodes and a live “bonus” episode, totaling over 20 hours of full-cast audio theater.
As the show reached its 10-year anniversary this past June, ‘Second Shift’ continues to be a well-known production in the audio drama community, with storytelling and mixing that still shines. We start our listening collection off with the beginning of this 2-season tale: “Episode 1 – Everything to Everyone, Part 1“. After that, we hear the unfolding of another group lost in an unknown wilderness with ‘The Orphans’ in their first episode, “The Crash“. Happy listening!
